Re-master of NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine" Released Today

Wow, how'd I miss this? Trent Reznor and co. have released a special remastered edition of their influential Pretty Hate Machine album. It was a hell of a debut, and although Reznor had yet to hone his own productional style, with help like Flood, Adrian Sherwood, and John Fryer, it happens to sound great too. Anyone checked this one out yet?

A couple of years ago Trent complained that TVT, his old label, had sold the rights to Ryko without giving him a chance to buy his debut back. If things have changed and Trent's part of the re-master, great. If not, I'm afraid PHM may fall prey to "the loudness wars", as in, older releases getting 'remastered' for loudness instead of clarity and dynamics. (keep fingers crossed)

Trent Reznor is the man that got me started on music. Pretty Hate Machine is a work of art and despite its age, it still sounds pretty cool. Hopefully the remaster will sound better and i'm glad they added the Queen Cover "Get Down Make Love" as the 11th track. When I get a chance i'll have to pick this up...

Amazon dropped off the remastered PHM for me yesterday and I've been listening to it for a while. I go back to the album frequently and was really happy with the clarity the remaster brings.

There's nothing really new here...the songs aren't textured/layered the way they are in later albums so I don't feel like I'm hearing new tracks (which I wasn't expecting anyway). The levels are up in certain areas and everything is so much more clear with better separation.

And talk about getting beefier beats...the lows in Down In It are sick. :)

The intro to Sin sounds great and the snarl in Trent's voice comes across a little more ferociously.

That's What I Get impressed me a lot too with the synth/bass standing out a little more than before.

For $7.99, I couldn't refuse but if you don't go back to the album there's probably not a reason to get it unless you just want a remastered version.
